    Effective organizational leadership is crucial for success, and competent leaders are instrumental in empowering teams, increasing productivity, and achieving goals. In healthcare settings, leadership significantly influences workplace culture, necessitating effective collaboration and open communication (Monroe, 2019). In this context, it is vital for leaders to create a supportive environment for healthcare workers, fostering optimal benchmarks and improving nursing practice and care delivery standards.

    The central focus is on enhancing working conditions and fostering a collaborative culture among nursing staff. Stress is a prevalent issue for nursing professionals, exacerbated by extended shifts and inadequate support. Research indicates that healthcare facilities promoting healthier lifestyles and collaborative workspaces experience higher employee satisfaction and improved patient care (Miles & Scott, 2019).

    Case Study – Evaluation of Head Nurse Performance

    The psychiatry unit initially adopted a primary healthcare nursing model, emphasizing collaboration and interdisciplinary teamwork. The head nurse, Jackie, however, exhibits a leadership style contradicting established guidelines. Her absence from crucial patient care conferences, unprofessional behavior, and disregard for communication negatively impact nursing practices, morale, and productivity. Furthermore, her inappropriate interactions violate the American Nurses Association (ANA) regulations (Monroe, 2019).

    Jackie’s actions breach the ANA’s code of ethics, particularly regarding professional responsibilities, relationships with co-workers, and patient responsibility. Professional boundaries, as defined by the ANA, are crucial in healthcare, and their violation requires addressing through appropriate channels (Aghamohammadi et al., 2021; Monroe, 2019).

    Aligning with Organizational Mission, Vision, and Goals

    Jackie’s behavior conflicts with the healthcare facility’s mission and goals, compromising patient care and experiences. Her actions do not align with the organization’s core values and objectives, hindering progress toward creating a collaborative and productive workplace (Huang et al., 2021).

    Action Plan for Leadership Improvement

    To address these issues, a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) is proposed, with the Assistant Head Nurse temporarily assuming the role of Acting Nurse Manager. Specific initiatives, including punctuality, communication responsiveness, adherence to dress code, and ethical conduct, are outlined. The plan will be implemented over a month, emphasizing evidence-based collaboration techniques and the TeamSTEPPS framework (Cooke & Valentine, 2021).

    At the PIP’s conclusion, a meeting between Jackie, the HR representative, and the supervising manager will evaluate her progress. The outcomes will determine her ability to resume the nurse manager role, with close monitoring of her leadership and the Acting Nurse Manager’s performance.
